Take charge of your return to work
More than 80% of working mothers in the UK experienced trouble returning to work after maternity leave according to a new report from recruitment platform TotalJobs with the Fawcett Society, a Uk-based gender equality charity.
Returning to Work
It's hard to return to work after becoming a parent – even if you have a supportive employer – sometimes it feels like everything has changed and equally nothing at all. It’s also just as hard not to go back to work and take a career break, especially if what you do as a job has formed part of your identity up to that point. The good news is that there are many things that you can think about before your leave and as you return so you feel you have a voice and some control over your journey and the decisions you have in front of you. The more preparation you can do before you go, the smoother the ride will be on the other side. That doesn't mean that all is lost if you haven't had the smoothest transition into parental leave - you still have options! You may carry doubts of what you want and how you might feel – and that’s fine too. I can support you and help you work towards clarity. What is not in doubt is that everyone you meet will have an opinion about what you need to do and how you need to do it – be that work or something else. I believe that we are all different and ultimately, we need to find our own way of making ‘it’ work, whatever ‘it’ is for us. That is why a no-judgment space is so vitally important to me and how I choose to support clients. |
Through 1-2-1 or group coaching sessions I provide the framework and tools to help you navigate the choices that you have at all stages of planning parental leave and returning to work.
I work with individuals and organisations to support their employees at every point of the parental process. Areas covered:
Supporting Parents I work with individuals and with progressive organisations that recognise the value of parents within their workforce. By investing in supporting parents exiting and re-entering the workplace you will realise multiple benefits, not least for your own employees but also for the organisation and wider teams that will likely benefit from an informed and decisive employee giving you the ability to plan resources more realistically; quicker integration back into the workplace; enhanced productivity and engagement. |
'That works for me' a company supporting flexible working conducted a survey that showed only 24% returned from maternity to their pre-maternity hours, while 57% left the workforce, with many citing mental ill-health and the impossibility of managing their work and family as the causes.

Beyond the High-level Stats
|
I am driven and ambitious and I see the value in people and supporting each other as we all make our way on this journey to success (however each of us defines what that is for us). I am a connector and very much believe that by collaborating we can produce the best results if we lean into the people and the skills that surround us. I work towards developing a harmony between career and family – my family are everything to me and if I’m honest I have my eldest child to thank for setting up my business – she allowed me to reflect and review my perspective and sometimes seeing things from a different angle can change the whole picture. I owe both of my children so much – they teach me something different every day – whether that be in leadership, in my own perspective or the world in general!
I love working hard and I gain a lot from that feeling of productivity and progress. My aim is to make a positive difference to others AND to also know the moments where I can slow down, connect with nature and just be... My career to date has seen me in a number of different organisations ranging from commercial teams through to membership and professional bodies with a non-profit focus. Interestingly, the majority of industries I have worked in are seen as ‘male dominated’, perhaps because of this I have felt the need to prove myself and be 100% certain about the leadership roles I go for and the ones I leave behind. |
For a long time, I chose to not disclose my parental desires or discuss my children at work. I felt that as a woman I would not be seen as dedicated, ambitious or focused and driven, which would in turn negatively affect my career prospects.
Over the last few years I have felt a need to be more transparent, allowing colleagues to see the whole me – be more vulnerable and to actively choose appropriate moments to talk about my career ambitions, my children and my parental experiences. Why? Because as a leader I want to be authentic, it’s important to be able to be yourself. I also believe that being able to bring our full selves to work allows individuals and businesses to thrive, be more sustainable and grow the bottom line. Change will not happen overnight, and if it were easy, then we would already see parity. But the dial is moving in the right direction and my mission is to work with others that are invested in making that change too. |
